Elements Windows, St Antony’s Priory, Claypath, Durham
Revd Dr Nicholas Buxton, Chief Executive, Society of the Sacred Mission writes:
Sophie was commissioned by the Trustees of the Society of the Sacred Mission to make stained glass windows for the Chapel at St Antony’s Priory, Durham. The windows were installed in July 2025; the results are absolutely stunning.
The brief specified a design that was abstract, fluid, light and translucent. Following a site visit, when Sophie spent a weekend at the Priory, attending worship and meeting members of the congregation and others connected with the Priory, a proposal was submitted to the Trustees. The proposal reflected exactly what we had in mind and was enthusiastically accepted. As well as the design of the glass itself, Sophie also project-managed the entire production process, which involved not only manufacture of the glass panels, but also commissioning suitable frames. In this she took great care to make sure everything was done to an extremely high standard and within a timetable that fitted our requirements.
Similarly, when it came to installation, Sophie was once again present on site to oversee the whole process, making sure it was all completed to our satisfaction. We chose Sophie for our windows because we felt her work would be right for our chapel, both in terms of artistic style and also because we knew she would bring a high degree of theological literacy to the design process. Our hunch paid off; the windows have been hugely admired by everyone who has seen them.
