Welcome

Sophie Hacker graduated as a painter from the Slade School of Art and subsequently re-trained in sculpture. Her paintings and sculptures are in private collections and public spaces.

She has been Artist in Residence at St Mary’s in the Lace Market, Nottingham, and Sarum College, Salisbury and is currently Arts and Exhibitions Consultant for Winchester Cathedral.

Her sculptures use found objects and natural materials to highlight the beauty of the ordinary and to point to the joy and suffering at the heart of creation. To view these, see Sculptures and Commissions.

Recent commissions include ‘Icons of the Incarnation’, church furnishings, altars and frontals for parish churches, and a stained glass window for an 11th century church in Hampshire (see ‘current projects’).

Oil and acrylic paintings are rooted in the English landscape. Sketches made on walks are restated in simple forms, with colour and texture used to express the vitality of the natural world. To view these, see Paintings.

Past work focussed on the potential of soft, chalky pastels. She used this medium, on hand made paper, almost exclusively for ten years.  Some examples of these will be found in the Shop.

Sophie Hacker has a passion for encouraging creativity in others. She runs regular workshops, art weeks and courses. For more information about groups that Sophie Hacker works with, please go to 'Teaching'.  She also lectures on Art and Spirituality.

As you tour the website, you will notice works which are held in private or public collections. Some paintings and sculptures have been specially commissioned. If you would like more details of what’s involved in commissioning a new work, please contact Sophie directly.
