Reliquary for the bones of an Anglo-Saxon royal saint
In March 2020, the parish church of St Mary and St Eanswythe in Folkestone, Kent, announced to the world that they did, indeed, hold the remains of an Anglo-Saxon royal princess. There is much to learn about this remarkable young woman who died in the seventh century. Soon after the announcement, a national competition was launched to seek a design for a new reliquary. In August 2024, I completed the work in time for St Eanswythe's Feast Day on September 12th. The reliquary is constructed from glass and brass. The runes are Anglo-Saxon, the images depict an imagined likeness of the saint, two of her miracles and her name. The transparency of the sides enable pilgrims to view the relics without needing to open the casket. The brass frame was constructed by Steven Bate, and the glass panels by Proto Glass Studios.
